The story of Fancypants Bakery begins in late 2003. Owner Maura Duggan was restless in her job and craving a challenge. Armed with a degree in neuroscience from Northeastern University and one in education from Harvard University, she began brainstorming about opening a business. Lots of ideas came to mind, but the one that stuck out was one of her favorite things -- sweets! Meanwhile, Justin Housman, partner, was busy teaching in Wellesley, MA. He had a degree in English from Boston College and one in education from UMASS Boston, and loved being a teacher. But running a food business was an idea that had always been close to Justin's heart; after college, he had attended the French Culinary Institute in New York City. And so, after work and on the weekends, Maura and Justin began to plan. She researched the specialty food industry and he developed recipes. She tested lots of cookies; he made hundreds more! Finally, in February 2004, Fancypants Bakery was ready to open. And the cookies were a hit! The part-time cookie adventure very quickly became a full-time one. Both 'retired' from their jobs in the field of education, and moved the business to its current location in East Walpole, MA.
